May is a month of celebrating people and milestones, like the mothers and mother-figures in our lives. As Cincinnati Regional Chamber President & CEO Brendon Cull wrote in the Chamber Newsletter a few weeks ago, we should find ways to support moms in this community all year long, including how we craft workplace policies that support parents and caregivers.

Part of what we offer at the Workforce Innovation Center is a Policy and Practice Review service in which we examine your existing policies to identify those which could be improved and also determine which policies you should add. That includes looking at policies related to parental leave, lactation accommodations, and flexible scheduling options, among others. Establishing best-in-class policies shows your employees that you value them and their families at various stages in their lives.

And as you likely know, childcare continues to be a hot topic for many families and employers because of the significant cost and often the challenges in finding care. If this is an issue for people in your workplace, please send me a note as we are wanting to understand more about the local childcare challenges and needs employers are seeing within their workplaces. If you or your employees are looking for childcare, we can connect you with our partners at 4C for Children or EC Learn to explore available options.

May is also a month to celebrate individuals who are graduating from education and training programs with degrees and certificates. Our region is rich with high schools, trade schools, community colleges, and universities with many graduates celebrating significant accomplishments in their personal journeys at this time of year. These organizations do such important work to train and upskill people in our region. We can help get you connected to them if you are looking for ways to grow your employees’ skills and find new talent.

Personally, I am excited to celebrate my youngest child’s graduation from Kindergarten this evening at the wonderful preschool/Kindergarten she has attended for the last four years. She has grown tremendously during that time and I am grateful that we found an outstanding school to nurture her growth and learning. I plan to bring tissues for the celebratory tears I am sure to shed!

At the end of May, I reflect gratefully upon the opportunity I have as a working mother to have a meaningful impact on milestones like these for working families and their employers across the region through the Workforce Innovation Center. Let me know how I can further support your organization and the people you employ.
